Dr. Calvin Briggs, a 1994 graduate and past trustee of Clark Atlanta University, is the Founder & Executive Director of the Southern Center for Broadening Participation in STEM. A veteran educator in mathematics & education leadership, with more than 23 years of experience, has instructed at the secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Dr. Briggs continues to “Create New Possibilities in STEM college and career pathways for all Students, “specifically, minoritized, first-generation students. In his role with the Southern Center, Dr. Briggs seeks to “build capacity” among institutions and stakeholders committed to closing performance gaps and advocating for targeted policy, funding, and programmatic support and guidance; increasing the effectiveness and sustainability of STEM programs across the nation. Particularly, HBCU’s, MSIs, HSIs, and TCUs.



Dr. Briggs vigorously advocates for impactful STEM policy and broadly disseminates “Best Practices” in STEM student recruitment, retention, success, and leadership. His service includes committee and board assignments with the Alabama Mathematics Science and Technology Coalition (AMSTEC), the Understanding Interventions Advisory Board, and the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences National Forum. Most notably, Dr. Briggs serves as a member of the Alabama Governor's Advisory Council for Excellence in STEM (ACES) and a member of the Alabama State Mathematics Course of Study Committee, he contributed to the development and adoption of the “Alabama Roadmap to STEM Success: A Strategic Plan for STEM Education” and the 2019 Alabama State Mathematics Course of Study,” respectively. As an inaugural member to the newly established Alabama STEM Council, to advise state leadership on ways to improve STEM-related education, career awareness and workforce development opportunities across the state; Dr. Briggs believes “It is essential that we equip, elevate, and enrich our students, faculty, and institutional leadership with the necessary tools to increase interest and advance degree completion, specifically, in STEM career pathways.”



Recent projects include serving as a research partner for Complete College America, a national higher education advocacy group, to examine opportunities to enhance student success across the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) landscape. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the initiative explored a systems approach to improving the Digital Learning Infrastructure at these essential institutions of higher education. The scope of the effort included, but was not limited to, improving availability, awareness, and adoption of digital infrastructure.



Dr. Briggs received his master’s degree in mathematics education; and a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership, Policy and Law from Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL. His research explores STEM self-efficacy, identity, and achievement in mathematics among minority populations.



Dr. Calvin Briggs partners with his wife, Dr. Samantha Elliott Briggs, Providing Equitable Access in Education (PEACE) for all students. PEACE Consulting provides program evaluation, curriculum development, grant writing, and workshop services.
