MSU PERSIST Summer Program: Enhancing Science Student Retention through Pre-Matriculation Case-Based Learning
Description

This study piloted a pre-college transition program to enhance college readiness in biology, chemistry, and mathematics for students who completed high school during the COVID-19 period. The program focused on improving higher-order learning through case studies for biology and chemistry, and individualized math instruction using ALEKS, an adaptive online platform. The primary objectives were to improve foundational knowledge in biology and chemistry and place students into college-level math courses. Results from three years showed significant improvement in chemistry performance and increased placement into college-level math. Improvements in biology were not statistically significant, but showed positive trends. Overall GPAs were not statistically significant. The case study approach and ALEKS were effective in promoting higher-order learning and math readiness, emphasizing the potential of these methods to prepare students for STEM coursework. Future programs could further refine strategies for enhancing biology outcomes and broadening student success.
