Strategies and Resources to Support Mentorship Ecosystem Development
Description

Mentorship occurs within larger ecosystems of relationships, programs, policies, and cultural trends and values. Work at different institutions and organizations by members of this team and their collaborators has focused on understanding the STEMM mentorship ecosystem and supporting leaders in developing innovative interventions to optimize inclusive research training environments. At the same time, national tensions have emerged around strong differences of opinions regarding e.g., the need to address equity and other social priorities within research training environments, decreasing public distrust in science, the composition of our research workforce and trainee’s changing attitudes toward STEM careers. In this session, participants will leverage findings from the 2019 NASEM report and other resources related to fostering cultures, policies and structures that support trainee and mentor development at the levels of training programs, departments, colleges, universities, agencies and society.
